About Storability Software

Storability Software, founded in 2000 by Matthew Westover, specialized in providing enterprise storage management solutions. The company's software was designed to centralize and simplify the management of complex, multi-site, and multi-vendor storage infrastructures, enabling clients to control and capitalize on their storage investments.

The firm's business model initially focused on being a "storage service provider," running storage systems for other companies. However, it later pivoted to selling storage resource management software directly. This software, including its flagship Global Storage Manager (GSM), targeted enterprises needing to manage network-attached storage systems. In 2003, Storability acquired the resource management software assets from the defunct ProvisionSoft, enhancing its GSM product with advanced workflow automation and provisioning technology. This acquisition was aligned with the industry trend of utility computing, allowing customers to allocate storage and server resources more efficiently.

Throughout its operation, Storability secured significant venture capital funding, raising a total of $61 million from investors such as Battery Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Madison Dearborn Partners. In 2002, the company appointed John Rando as Chairman and Tim Leisman as President and CEO to accelerate business growth, while founder Matthew Westover remained on the board. The company sold its services group to StorageTek in July 2002 to focus solely on its software offerings. Storability Software was eventually acquired by Aspen Peripherals in September 2004.
