StemRIM Inc. is a biopharmaceutical firm that emerged from Osaka University, concentrating on the development of what it terms "Regeneration-Inducing Medicine™". The company was established on October 30, 2006, with the objective of developing pharmaceuticals based on discoveries made by Professor Katsuto Tamai of Osaka University's Graduate School of Medicine. Professor Tamai, now the company's Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, conceived the core idea after observing the persistent skin regeneration in patients with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, a severe genetic disease. This led to the hypothesis that stem cells could be recruited from elsewhere in the body to repair damaged tissue, forming the foundation of the company's research.

The company's business model is that of a research and development-focused biotech, which collaborates with academic institutions like Osaka University to advance its discoveries. StemRIM's primary strategy involves licensing its developed drug candidates to pharmaceutical companies for clinical trials, manufacturing, and sales. In return, StemRIM receives upfront payments, milestone revenues based on development progress, and royalties on sales. A key partnership was established with Shionogi & Co., Ltd. for the development and potential commercialization of its leading drug candidate, Redasemtide.

StemRIM's core product concept, Regeneration-Inducing Medicine™, represents a departure from conventional cell therapies. Instead of extracting, culturing, and re-injecting cells, this approach uses intravenously administered compounds, which are peptides or proteins, to stimulate the patient's own bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. These activated stem cells then travel through the bloodstream to the site of injury or disease and differentiate into various cell types to promote tissue repair. The leading pipeline candidate, Redasemtide, is a synthetic peptide derived from the HMGB1 protein, engineered to trigger stem cell mobilization without inducing inflammation. This platform technology is being investigated for a wide array of difficult-to-treat conditions, including epidermolysis bullosa, acute ischemic stroke, cardiomyopathy, chronic liver disease, and knee osteoarthritis. Having gone public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in August 2019, the company directs its capital towards furthering its research and development pipelines.
