About Stem Cell Therapeutics
Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp. was a Canadian biotechnology company that pivoted its focus, culminating in a strategic name change and a multi-billion dollar acquisition.
Originally, the company operated under the name Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp., developing drug-based therapies for central nervous system diseases. Its approach was to use drugs that would stimulate a patient's own resident stem cells to repair neurological function lost to conditions like stroke and multiple sclerosis. The company even licensed intellectual property from Dr. Samuel Wise to this end. A key milestone during this period was a Phase I clinical trial for hCG, which demonstrated the hormone's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, paving the way for Phase II trials for stroke treatment.
In a significant strategic shift in June 2014, the company rebranded to Trillium Therapeutics Inc. The leadership, including then-CEO Dr. Niclas Stiernholm, stated the name "Stem Cell Therapeutics" no longer accurately reflected the business's strong focus on the immuno-oncology sector, specifically its checkpoint inhibitor program targeting the CD47/SIRPa immunoregulatory axis.
Following this pivot, Trillium Therapeutics operated as a clinical-stage immuno-oncology company developing therapies for cancer. The company's portfolio included biologics designed to enhance the innate immune system's ability to detect and destroy cancer cells. Its two lead molecules, TTI-622 and TTI-621, were novel SIRPα-Fc fusion proteins that block the SIRPα–CD47 axis, a key immune checkpoint in hematological malignancies. These molecules showed promise in Phase 1b/2 development for various blood cancers and were also being tested for solid tumors.
This strategic focus attracted major pharmaceutical interest, beginning with a $25 million investment from Pfizer in September 2020. This initial investment led to a full acquisition, with Pfizer announcing a definitive agreement in August 2021 to acquire Trillium for an equity value of $2.26 billion. The acquisition was successfully completed in November 2021, and Trillium Therapeutics became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pfizer, with its shares delisted from public stock exchanges.
