SquareOne Mail Inc. emerged in 2014 as an email management solution targeting busy individuals overwhelmed by cluttered inboxes. The company was founded by a team with pertinent industry experience: CEO Branko Cerny, who holds a degree in Psychology and previously worked in marketing at Google; Weidong Shao, who spent five years on the Gmail team; and Arthur Conner, an experienced iOS engineer. Cerny's background in psychology informed the app's core mission: to create a less overwhelming email experience rather than just a more powerful client.

SquareOne Mail's core product is an iPhone application that rethinks the traditional inbox. Instead of a single, long list of messages, the app automatically sorts commercial and social emails and allows users to group remaining messages into user-created categories called 'Zones'. This approach provides a high-level 'Dashboard' view of all new messages, giving the user control over which zones trigger notifications. A key feature is the ability to silence notifications from specific zones with a simple swipe, allowing users to prioritize their information stream and focus on what is momentarily important. When launched, the app was exclusively for iPhone and supported only Gmail, with plans to add universal IMAP support and an Android version.
