Springleaf Therapeutics
Subcutaneous patch pump for biologic drug delivery
About Springleaf Therapeutics
SpringLeaf Therapeutics was a Boston-based company founded in 2007 as a spinout from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The company, originally named Entra Pharmaceuticals until March 2011, focused on developing drug delivery technologies. Its core product was a wearable, disposable "patch pump" designed for the subcutaneous administration of parenteral medications, particularly for chronic conditions. This technology aimed to solve challenges with delivering large-volume or highly viscous biopharmaceuticals, enabling patients to self-administer treatments at home.
The company's technology was based on the convergence of materials science and medicine, originating from a 2007 MIT project called "Low-cost continuous drug delivery". The founders were MIT professors Michael Cima and Yet-Ming Chiang, who pioneered the use of electrochemical actuators from battery technology to power the delivery system. SpringLeaf secured significant funding, raising a total of $38.3 million over four rounds from investors including Flybridge Capital Partners, North Bridge Venture Partners, SR One, and Excel Venture Management. The company appointed Frank Bobe as President and CEO, and later, in 2012, Pieter Muntendam took over the roles of President and CEO.
Despite promising preclinical results and plans to initiate clinical trials, SpringLeaf Therapeutics ultimately failed to bring its subcutaneous pump system to market. The company ceased operations and was considered deadpooled by 2013 without conducting any clinical trials. Following its collapse, some of the company's assets were used to form a new entity, scPharmaceuticals, which was founded by SpringLeaf's last CEO, Pieter Muntendam, to continue working on a similar wearable pump technology with a different, less expensive approach.
