Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals
A clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery and development of a novel class of therapeutics using our proprietary small molecule nucleic acid hybrid (SMNH) chemistry platform
About Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals
Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals, founded in 2002, was a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of therapeutics for viral infections, inflammatory diseases, and specific cancers. The company's core technology was a proprietary small molecule nucleic acid hybrid (SMNH) chemistry platform, which was engineered to selectively target and modulate proteins involved in various diseases.

A significant portion of its research and development was initially directed towards treating chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). Its lead product candidate for HBV was inarigivir soproxil, an orally available immunomodulator. However, in early 2020, the company terminated the development of this drug and its HBV program following unexpected serious adverse events, including a patient death, during a Phase 2b clinical trial.
Following this strategic shift, Spring Bank refocused its efforts on its immuno-oncology pipeline. This portfolio was centered around its STING (STimulator of INterferon Gene) product candidates. The lead asset became SB 11285, an intravenously-administered STING agonist intended for the treatment of advanced solid tumors. The company also had programs for STING antagonists aimed at inflammatory diseases and a STING agonist antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) program for oncology applications.
In July 2020, after a review of strategic options, Spring Bank announced a planned business combination with F-star Therapeutics, a clinical-stage immuno-oncology company. This reverse merger transaction was completed in November 2020, with Spring Bank acquiring F-star and subsequently being renamed F-star Therapeutics, Inc. The combined entity continued to trade on the Nasdaq but under the new ticker symbol "FSTX". The new company's focus was to advance a pipeline of tetravalent bispecific antibodies from F-star, alongside Spring Bank's STING agonist, SB 11285. As part of the merger, Spring Bank stockholders received contingent value rights (CVRs) related to the future success of its STING programs.
