Cable telecommunications company that offers a range of home entertainment and information services MoreLess

In 1993, three former executives from Cencom Cable Television, Barry Babcock, Jerald Kent, and Howard Wood, founded Charter Communications in St. Louis, Missouri. The company's strategy focused on acquiring cable systems, initially in underserved areas, building a foundation for its future growth. A pivotal moment arrived in 1998 when Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen acquired the company for $4.5 billion. Under Allen's ownership, Charter ramped up its acquisition strategy, completing over ten major acquisitions in 1999 alone. This aggressive expansion culminated in the company going public on the NASDAQ stock exchange in November 1999, raising significant capital to fuel further growth and pay down debt. After navigating a bankruptcy filing in 2009, the company re-emerged and continued its expansion. The most transformative event in its history occurred in 2016 with the acquisition of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks for approximately $78.7 billion. This massive deal dramatically increased Charter's footprint, making it the second-largest cable operator in the United States. Following the merger, the company consolidated its services under the single brand name, Spectrum.
