About Spatial Wireless

Founded in 2001, Spatial Wireless, Inc. emerged as a developer of software-based networking solutions for mobile networks. The company, originally known as Spatial Communications Technologies, Inc., was co-founded by Pardeep Kohli, who also served as its President and CEO. Kohli later went on to co-found and lead other successful ventures in the telecommunications space, including Mavenir Systems.

Spatial Wireless focused on developing distributed mobile switching solutions. The company's business model revolved around providing mobile network operators with software-based and multi-standard distributed mobile switching solutions, positioning itself as a key vendor of wireless Softswitch technology. This addressed the need for more flexible and cost-effective voice transport solutions as mobile phone usage and subscriber numbers grew.

The flagship product was the Spatial Atrium, a distributed architecture switch designed for mobile switching centers (MSC) and gateway MSCs. This multi-standard mobile "soft switch" was compatible with GSM/EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA networks. Its primary benefit was the ability to control distributed media gateways and manage voice and data services, allowing operators to innovate services while reducing switching costs. The technology was aimed at major mobile operators and had commercial use and trials in North America, China, and India. Over its lifetime, the company raised a total of $57.6 million in funding from investors including Austin Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Qualcomm Ventures.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Alcatel. The acquisition was announced in September 2004 for approximately $250 million and was completed in December of the same year. Following the acquisition, Spatial Atrium was rebranded as the Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium Softswitch.
