About SpareFoot

SpareFoot operates as an extensive online marketplace for self-storage, connecting consumers with storage facility operators across the United States. The company's platform allows users to find, compare, and book storage units based on criteria such as price, location, and amenities, without charging a fee to the consumer. Revenue is generated through a performance-based model, where storage facility owners pay SpareFoot a finder's fee for each new tenant acquired through the platform.

The concept for SpareFoot originated in 2008 from the personal storage challenges of co-founder Chuck Gordon, then a UCLA student preparing to study abroad. Faced with the high cost and difficulty of finding a traditional storage unit, he stored his belongings with his friend and future co-founder, Mario Feghali. This experience sparked the idea for a more accessible storage solution. Initially launched as "Homstie," the business model was a person-to-person platform for renting out space in private residences, akin to an Airbnb for storage. However, the founders observed that more storage companies were signing up than homeowners, prompting a pivot to the current marketplace model focusing on professional self-storage operators. After rebranding to SpareFoot and relocating to Austin, Texas, the company gained early support from the Capital Factory incubator.

Over the years, SpareFoot has significantly expanded its service offerings and market presence. The platform includes options for specialized storage such as vehicles, boats, RVs, and wine. In 2016, it incorporated valet-storage, an on-demand service that includes pick-up and delivery of stored items. A major milestone occurred in 2018 when SpareFoot was acquired and merged with other industry technology leaders, including SiteLink and storEDGE, to form Storable. This integration created a comprehensive technology provider for the self-storage industry, though SpareFoot continues to operate as a consumer-facing marketplace under the Storable umbrella. The network now encompasses over 20,000 facilities nationwide.
