Space One
A small rocket launch service that aims to provide the fastest and most frequent launches at a reduced cost
About Space One
Established in 2018, Space One Co., Ltd. is a Japanese aerospace company focused on providing commercial space transportation services for small satellites. The company was founded through a significant joint investment by a consortium of major Japanese corporations, including Canon Electronics, IHI Aerospace, Shimizu Corporation, and the Development Bank of Japan. This collaboration leverages the distinct expertise of its stakeholders: Canon Electronics contributes its know-how in mass production and cost reduction from consumer devices; IHI Aerospace brings its extensive experience in solid rocket development; Shimizu Corporation provides its proficiency in constructing large-scale infrastructure; and the Development Bank of Japan offers financial acumen for long-term business stability. The company is led by President and CEO Masakazu Toyoda, a former official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry with a deep background in energy policy, international trade, and space policy.
Space One's core business revolves around its proprietary KAIROS (Kii-based Advanced & Instant Rocket System) launch vehicle. This 18-meter, solid-propellant rocket is designed to be responsive and low-cost, addressing the growing demand in the small satellite launch market. The rocket consists of three solid-fuel stages and a liquid-propellant upper stage, or kick stage, to ensure precise satellite deployment. It is engineered to carry payloads of up to 250 kg into low Earth orbit (LEO) and 150 kg into a sun-synchronous orbit (SSO). The business model is centered on offering the world's shortest lead time from contract to launch and a high frequency of launches, aiming for 20 annually by the late 2020s. This model seeks to minimize satellite deployment costs for a diverse client base, including government agencies and private enterprises engaged in remote sensing, satellite internet, and space debris removal.
Operations are conducted from Spaceport Kii, Japan's first private spaceport, which was constructed by shareholder Shimizu Corporation and became operational in 2021. Located in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, the site's position on the southernmost tip of Japan's main island provides open sea access to the south and east, making it ideal for a variety of launch trajectories. The company has faced initial setbacks, with its first two launch attempts in March and December 2024 resulting in flight terminations. The first failure was attributed to an autonomous flight termination system detecting an anomaly seconds after liftoff. Despite these challenges, Space One maintains strong backing from its investors and continues to pursue its goal of becoming a key player in the global commercial space launch market.
