Sophya, now known as SoWork, provides a virtual workspace platform designed to enhance communication and productivity for remote and hybrid teams. The company was founded by CEO Vishal Punwani, a medical doctor and former Khan Academy Teaching Fellow, alongside COO Emma Giles and CTO Mark Liu. Punwani's background in medicine and experience as a World of Warcraft player inspired the platform's creation, aiming to replicate the collaborative and social aspects of gaming within a professional environment.

The core product, SoWork, is a customizable digital office where employees interact as avatars. It features proximity-based video and audio chat, allowing for spontaneous conversations similar to a physical office. The platform integrates tools for meeting scheduling, AI-powered note-taking and summaries, and a library for saving meeting recordings and action items. The goal is to reduce reliance on multiple separate tools like Zoom and Slack by offering a unified space that fosters a stronger company culture and addresses the sense of disconnection common in remote work.

In October 2021, Sophya raised $15 million in a seed funding round led by Talis Capital to develop its flagship product, SoWork. The platform serves a range of clients, from small startups to large corporations like Tinder, which uses SoWork to explore virtual workplace culture. The business model is subscription-based, with tiered pricing that includes a free version for small teams and paid plans for larger teams requiring more advanced features like unlimited meeting lengths and AI functionalities.
