Sonic

Sonic is a Layer-2 blockchain built on Solana, specifically designed for high-performance gaming. It operates as the first atomic Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) Layer-2, enabling sovereign game economies that settle on the main Solana L1 blockchain. The project is developed by Mirror World Labs, a GameFi infrastructure firm founded in 2022 by CEO Chris Zhu.

Before creating Sonic, Chris Zhu explored AI and blockchain, leading to the creation of Mirror World NFTs in 2021. The team initially focused on providing a suite of tools for game developers on Solana, covering everything from login methods to NFT marketplace integration. Recognizing the need for more robust gaming infrastructure on the network, they shifted focus to develop Sonic. The project launched in March 2024. By June 2024, Sonic had secured $12 million in a Series A funding round led by BITKRAFT Ventures, bringing its total funding to $16 million and reaching a $100 million valuation.

Sonic's core technology is the HyperGrid framework, which allows developers to deploy custom, high-throughput SVM rollups. This architecture is designed to scale the Solana gaming ecosystem to handle millions of transactions per second for each game. It provides developers with a sandbox environment, customizable gaming primitives, and tools for monetization. A key feature is its compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to deploy dApps from Ethereum to Solana seamlessly. The platform's native utility token, $SONIC, is used for transaction payments, staking, and governance.
