Soma Networks
All-ip solutions for world-class service providers
About Soma Networks
Soma Networks, founded in 1997 by Yatish Pathak and Michael Stumm, was a San Francisco-based company that specialized in providing WiMax products for last-mile wireless connectivity. The company aimed to offer a wireless alternative to traditional wired infrastructure, targeting telecommunications service providers and network operators. Yatish Pathak, who served as the CEO, brought his experience from the cellular infrastructure division of Bell Laboratories and held both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This background in wireless communications was foundational to the company's focus on developing a lower-cost, higher-performance wireless solution.
The company's business model centered on the direct sale of its equipment to telephone companies. Soma Networks' product portfolio included network base stations, wireless modems, broadband gateways, and multimedia application software. This suite of products, including the FlexMAX Mobile WiMAX System and the SoftAir Multimedia Application System, was designed to enable service providers to deliver converged voice over IP (VoIP), broadband data, and video applications. The all-IP architecture of their systems was a key feature, intended to simplify integration with existing billing and provisioning servers for service providers.
Soma Networks managed to raise a total of $251 million in funding over three rounds, with its final Series E round in July 2008 securing $51 million from investors including Huntington Ventures, SBI Group, and Daiwa Securities Group. The company had established a global presence with offices in Delhi, Ottawa, Singapore, and Toronto and was a principal member of the WiMAX Forum. Notably, it entered into a partnership with BSNL in India to deploy a large-scale WiMax network. Despite its efforts and significant capital investment, Soma Networks is now a defunct company. Its Indian subsidiary, Soma Networks Software Engineering Private Limited, is currently under liquidation.
