About SolasCure

SolasCure is a UK-based biotechnology company founded in 2017 by Dr. Sam Bakri as a spin-off from the German biotech company BRAIN Biotech AG. The firm is focused on developing therapeutic solutions for the chronic wound care market. SolasCure operates in a market where a significant unmet need exists for safe, effective, and painless wound debridement treatments, as millions of people globally suffer from chronic wounds.

The company's primary product under development is Aurase® Wound Gel, a hydrogel that contains a recombinant enzyme called Tarumase, cloned from medical maggots. This biomimetic product is designed to accelerate wound debridement by selectively breaking down necrotic tissue components like fibrin and collagen, preparing the wound bed for healing. A key feature of Aurase is that it aims to provide effective debridement without causing pain, a common issue with other methods. The gel is designed to be temperature-stable and suitable for application during standard dressing changes in various patient settings, including hospitals and home care.

SolasCure is advancing Aurase® Wound Gel through clinical trials. It has completed a Phase IIa trial across the UK, US, and Hungary, which established proof-of-concept for safety and efficacy. The company has initiated further Phase II trials (CLEANVLU2) to test higher concentrations of the enzyme to optimize healing rates, with plans for subsequent Phase III trials required for regulatory approval. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Fast Track Designation to the gel for treating calciphylaxis ulcers, a rare and severe condition, which could expedite its development and review process. Additionally, SolasCure is collaborating with the U.S. Army's Institute of Surgical Research to evaluate the gel's use in combat wound scenarios.

The company has secured significant funding to support its research and development. It has raised a total of $34.1M, including a £15m Series A round in 2021 and a £10.9m ($13.3M) Series B round in 2023. Key investors include Seneca Partners, BRAIN Biotech AG, EVA Pharma, and the Development Bank of Wales. SolasCure has also received grants such as the EIC Accelerator Grant and the Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst Grant.
