About Smart Sparrow

Smart Sparrow emerged from academic research, officially launching in 2011 as a commercial entity to advance adaptive learning technology. The company's origins trace back to research conducted by Dr. Dror Ben-Naim at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, where he was exploring Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Educational Data Mining. This research led to the creation of the Adaptive eLearning Platform, which formed the core of the company. Ben-Naim, with a Ph.D. in AI and Education, co-founded the company alongside Shaowei Ho and Zack Belinson.

The firm operated in the educational technology market, providing a cloud-based courseware development platform for K-12, higher education, and corporate clients. Its business model was based on providing its platform to institutions or individual teachers on a premium basis. The platform enabled educators and instructional designers to create, manage, and analyze interactive and adaptive digital learning content. A key feature was the ability to create personalized learning paths that would adapt to a student's performance, providing variable feedback and alternative routes through the material to reinforce concepts where learners struggled. The system provided analytics on student actions, including time spent on questions and the number of attempts, offering instructors insights into learning difficulties. The authoring tool included a library of drag-and-drop components like quizzes, simulations, and games to build engaging experiences.

Smart Sparrow secured a total of $23.5 million in funding over six rounds from investors including OneVentures, Yellow Brick Capital, and ACT. A significant milestone was its acquisition in January 2020 by Pearson, a global learning company, which acquired its technology and most of its staff for $25 million. This acquisition was intended to bolster Pearson's digital infrastructure and accelerate the development of its Global Learning Platform. The acquisition came as Smart Sparrow's platform, built on Adobe Flash, was facing the technology's end-of-life.
