About Skyrock Group
Skyrock Group operates as a multifaceted French media and technology company with deep roots in the country's broadcasting history. The firm's trajectory began with the pioneering efforts of its founder, Pierre Bellanger, who was an active participant in France's free radio movement of the 1970s and 80s, a period that successfully challenged the state's broadcasting monopoly. This foundational experience in independent media shaped the company's ethos. Bellanger, after studying biology and being inspired by early pirate radio, officially founded Skyrock as a national FM station on March 21, 1986, evolving from his previous station, 'La Voix du Lézard'.
The group's primary asset for many years has been the Skyrock radio station. Initially a rock-focused station, management astutely pivoted its programming during the 1990s to concentrate on the burgeoning genres of French rap and R&B. This strategic shift allowed the station to capture a significant youth market share, establishing itself as a key cultural platform for that demographic. The business model for the radio division is based on traditional advertising sales, sponsorships, and revenue from its franchised local stations, which air specific local content during designated hours.
Expanding its digital footprint, Skyrock Group launched Skyblog.com in December 2002. This platform became a dominant force in the early European social media landscape, predating many of its now-larger American competitors and providing a blogging platform that was particularly popular among French-speaking youth. At its peak in 2008, Skyrock.com was ranked as the seventh-largest social network globally. The platform, later rebranded as Skyrock.com, allowed users to create blogs, message each other, and customize profiles. However, after years of declining popularity in the face of competition, the social network was officially shut down on August 21, 2023, with its content archived by the National Archives of France.
More recently, the company has ventured into the technology sector with the launch of Skred, a secure, peer-to-peer instant messaging application. True to its origins in defending freedom of expression, Skred is designed with a heavy emphasis on user privacy and anonymity. The service does not require a phone number or email for registration and all communications are end-to-end encrypted, without being stored on any central server. Skred operates as a free application, supporting text messages, media sharing, and high-definition voice and video calls, positioning itself as a privacy-focused alternative in the crowded messenger market.
