About Sirific Wireless

Sirific Wireless, founded in 2000, was a fabless semiconductor company that specialized in the design and development of radio frequency (RF) transceiver integrated circuits for the wireless telecommunications market. The company was founded by Tajinder Manku, who also served as the Chief Technology Officer. Sirific Wireless operated as a private entity, establishing its headquarters in Richardson, Texas, and maintaining design facilities in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

The company's business model was centered on being a fabless manufacturer, meaning it designed the semiconductor chips but outsourced the manufacturing process. This approach allowed Sirific to focus on its core competency of RF design while leveraging the economies of scale of large foundries. Sirific's primary clients were manufacturers of mobile devices, including mobile phones, laptops, USB dongles, and mobile broadband datacards. The company generated revenue by selling its RF transceiver chips to these device manufacturers.

Sirific Wireless developed a portfolio of single-chip, multi-mode CMOS RF transceivers. Its flagship NEXUS platform supported multiple wireless standards such as HSDPA, WCDMA, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM. A key feature of their products, like the Nexus SW3200 and NexusRD SW3210, was the integration of a dual-receive path to enable receive diversity, which improved data throughput. The company's transceivers were designed to reduce cost, size, and power consumption for mobile device manufacturers by integrating more functionality onto a single chip and reducing the number of external components. Sirific was a proponent of the DigRF standard, an interface for connecting baseband processors to RF integrated circuits, and partnered with multiple baseband providers to ensure interoperability.

Throughout its history, Sirific Wireless secured significant venture capital funding totaling $43.3 million over four rounds. Notable investors included Intel Capital, Celtic House Venture Partners, BDC Capital, and Birch Hill Equity Partners. A major milestone was the announcement in April 2008 of a definitive merger agreement with Icera Inc., a UK-based leader in software-defined wireless modem chipsets. The merger, which was completed in May 2008, was a strategic move to combine Sirific's RF expertise with Icera's baseband technology to offer a complete chipset solution for the growing mobile broadband market. Following the merger, the combined entity operated under the Icera name. Icera, including the technology and expertise from Sirific, was later acquired by Nvidia in May 2011.
