SiPort
High-performance, low power, highly-integrated single-chip CMOS solutions
About SiPort
In 2004, Aiman Kabakibo founded SiPort to tackle a specific challenge: creating low-power, single-chip solutions for digital radio. The company focused on manufacturing semiconductors for portable HD radio, aiming to embed the technology in devices like MP3 players and personal navigation systems. This placed them in the growing market for digital radio services from terrestrial broadcasts on mobile platforms. SiPort secured significant venture backing, raising a total of $30.5 million over two rounds from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Morgenthaler, and a strategic investor, Intel Capital. The company's technology gained traction and was notably used in the Microsoft Zune HD player. However, the company's journey was marked by a tragic event in November 2008, when CEO Sid Agrawal and two other executives were killed in a workplace shooting. Founder Aiman Kabakibo stepped back into the CEO role to guide the company forward. In May 2011, seven years after its founding, SiPort was quietly acquired by one of its key investors, Intel. There was no major press announcement, but the move signaled Intel's strategic interest in digital radio as an essential feature for mobile devices. The SiPort team was integrated into Intel's Mobile Wireless Group, tasked with leveraging their digital radio expertise to enhance Intel's offerings in the mobile space.
