Represents a technological leadership in the electrophoretic bistable e-paper displays MoreLess

Sipix Imaging, Inc. operated as a key developer of electrophoretic display (EPD) technologies, positioning itself as a primary competitor to E Ink in the electronic paper market before its eventual acquisition. Established in 1999 with operations based in California and Taiwan, the company focused on innovating and manufacturing electronic paper modules for a variety of applications. The firm secured significant investment, raising a total of $124 million from investors including Baring Private Equity Partners España, Court Square, E Ink, Kilferra Management, and Omega Funds.

Sipix's core business involved the development and custom manufacturing of EPD materials, enabling system designers to bring products to market efficiently. Its technology was commercialized for use in high-resolution displays, electronic shelf labels, information displays, smart cards, and various consumer products. A notable client was Hanlin, which utilized Sipix's displays in its A6 and A9 eBook readers. The business model centered on supplying these display modules to other manufacturers and offering custom production services. A significant partnership existed with AU Optronics (AUO), which utilized Sipix's technology in its e-paper products and was a major shareholder.

The company's flagship product was a low-power, flexible electronic paper based on a patented Microcup architecture. Unlike E Ink's microcapsule technology, which suspended black and white particles in a clear liquid, Sipix's method involved suspending white particles in black ink contained within tiny, flexible microcups measuring 0.15mm. This structure was impact and moisture resistant. Key benefits of this technology included high contrast and reflectivity, a wide viewing angle of nearly 180 degrees, and bistable power consumption, meaning it only used power when the displayed image was updated. The material was durable, lightweight, and could be produced in custom sizes from an 11-inch wide roll, supporting multiple monochromatic color options like black, red, green, blue, and gold.

A major milestone for Sipix was its acquisition by E Ink Holdings. In August 2012, E Ink announced a definitive agreement to acquire SiPix Technology Inc. and its subsidiary, SiPix Imaging Inc. The deal, valued at approximately NT$1.5 billion (about $50 million USD), involved E Ink purchasing AUO's 82.7% stake with the intent to acquire up to 100%. The acquisition was finalized in November 2012, consolidating the electrophoretic display market and giving E Ink control over both microcapsule and microcup technologies. This strategic move expanded E Ink's product portfolio, strengthened its patent holdings, and solidified its dominant position in the e-paper industry, where it already held over 90% market share in the eReader market.
