Sigmatel
Semiconductor company that designs, develops, and markets proprietary, mixed-signal integrated circuits, or ics
About Sigmatel
SigmaTel, Inc. was a semiconductor company established in 1993 and headquartered in Austin, Texas. The firm specialized in designing and marketing analog-intensive, mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs) and system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for the consumer electronics market. SigmaTel's business model involved providing complete system-level solutions to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original device manufacturers (ODMs). These solutions included highly integrated semiconductors, customizable firmware and software, reference designs, and development tools.
The company's product portfolio was extensive, featuring audio codecs, TV audio products, microcontrollers for digital appliances, and portable compressed video decoders. SigmaTel's audio chips, such as the STAC9xxx series, were widely used in the sound cards of personal computers and on-board audio for motherboards. A significant area of success for the company was the portable audio market. Its SoC products, including the STMP35xx and STMP36xx series, were integral to a vast number of flash memory-based MP3 players. At its peak in 2004, SigmaTel's SoCs were found in over 70% of all such devices sold globally, including the first-generation Apple iPod Shuffle, Dell Ditty, and models from Creative and Philips.
A key milestone for SigmaTel was its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2003, which at the time was the largest in Austin's history. The company's trajectory included several strategic acquisitions to broaden its technology base. In July 2005, it acquired the rights to software technologies from Rio Audio, a move that expanded its intellectual property in the hard disk drive (HDD) MP3 player market. In the same month, SigmaTel acquired Protocom Corp., a semiconductor provider for the multi-function imaging market, to enter the imaging applications sector. In 2006, the company sold its PC and notebook audio codec product lines to Integrated Device Technology (IDT) for approximately $72 million in cash. Ultimately, in 2008, Freescale Semiconductor acquired SigmaTel for $110 million, and the company was delisted from NASDAQ.
