About Sientra
Sientra, Inc. operated as a medical aesthetics company with a specific focus on the plastic surgery market. The company was founded as Juliet Medical, Inc. in August 2003 and rebranded to Sientra, Inc. in April 2007. It was founded by Hani Zeini, an industry veteran with over two decades of healthcare experience, including a leadership role at Inamed Corporation (now Allergan Medical). Recognizing the high barriers to entry in the U.S. breast implant market, which was long dominated by just two companies, Zeini's strategy was to acquire the assets of Silimed, a firm already partway through the FDA approval process, to introduce more choice for surgeons and patients.

The company's primary business involved designing, developing, and commercializing a portfolio of surgical aesthetic products. Its main clients were board-certified plastic surgeons, hospitals, and surgery centers across the United States. Sientra's revenue was generated through the direct sale of its products. The product line was extensive, featuring a comprehensive portfolio of round and shaped silicone gel breast implants, which were the first fifth-generation implants to receive FDA approval for sale in the U.S. The company also developed and sold breast tissue expanders like the AlloX2®, AlloX2Pro™ (the first FDA-cleared MRI-compatible tissue expander), and DERMASPAN®. Beyond implants, Sientra's offerings included the Viality™ fat transfer system, SimpliDerm® Human Acellular Dermal Matrix, and the BIOCORNEUM® scar treatment gel.
After commencing U.S. sales in 2012 and going public in October 2014, Sientra experienced periods of growth but also faced financial challenges. Citing macroeconomic pressures and shifts in consumer spending, Sientra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 12, 2024. The company pursued a strategic sale of its assets through the bankruptcy process. In April 2024, it was announced that Tiger Aesthetics Medical, LLC would acquire Sientra's breast reconstruction and augmentation business for $42.5 million plus the assumption of certain liabilities, including product warranties. Simultaneously, Nuance Intermediary, LLC acquired the BIOCORNEUM business for $8 million. Following the acquisition, Sientra operates as a division of Tiger Aesthetics Medical, which has committed to maintaining operations and honoring existing warranties.
