Surgical Innovation Associates (SIA), now part of Integra LifeSciences, was established in 2016 as a spin-out from Northwestern University. The company was founded by Dr. Alexei Mlodinow, Todd Cruikshank, and Dr. John Kim, who invented the core technology. Dr. Mlodinow, a surgeon by training with an MD/MBA from Northwestern University, was inspired to create a better surgical mesh after his mother's mastectomy. He led the company as its founding CEO, securing significant equity and NIH funding and guiding it through key regulatory milestones.

The firm's primary business revolves around the development and commercialization of advanced bioresorbable medical devices for plastic and reconstructive surgery. SIA's flagship product is DuraSorb®, a resorbable, monofilament mesh designed to provide temporary soft tissue support during the critical phases of healing before being completely absorbed by the body within about a year. This approach addresses the potential long-term complications associated with permanent implants. DuraSorb® gained FDA 510(k) clearance for soft tissue support in late 2018, CE Mark approval in Europe in 2020 for various reconstructive and aesthetic procedures, and began its commercial launch in the U.S. in 2020.

The company's business model focused on direct sales and partnerships to introduce its products into hospitals and surgical centers, targeting plastic and reconstructive surgeons. After demonstrating significant revenue growth since its 2020 commercial launch, SIA was acquired by Integra LifeSciences in December 2022. The deal was valued at up to $140 million, consisting of a $50 million upfront payment with an additional $90 million contingent on revenue and regulatory milestones. This acquisition integrates SIA's synthetic mesh technology with Integra's portfolio, aiming to establish a leading position in the implant-based breast reconstruction market.
