In 1994, a new real estate concept crossed the Atlantic. The American self-storage model, a relatively unknown business in Europe at the time, found its new home. Shurgard was established in Brussels, Belgium, in 1995 by its founder, the American company Shurgard Storage Centers. The first European store opened its doors in Brussels in 1995. The idea was simple: provide secure, accessible storage space for individuals and businesses. This was a direct bet that European cities, with their dense populations and smaller living spaces, were a ripe market for this service. The company's expansion was methodical. It focused on establishing a strong presence in key urban areas across Western Europe, including the Netherlands, France, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Denmark. The recognizable blue and orange branding became a common sight in these metropolitan landscapes, signaling a reliable solution for decluttering lives and businesses. A pivotal chapter in Shurgard's story unfolded in 2006. Public Storage, the largest self-storage company in the United States, acquired the American parent company, and with it, its 60% stake in the European operations. This move brought significant financial backing and operational expertise. Then, in 2018, Shurgard Self Storage successfully launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on Euronext Brussels. This event marked a new era of independence and ambition for the company, cementing its position as the largest self-storage provider in Europe and demonstrating the maturation of the industry on the continent.
