About ShopX

ShopX, operating under the legal name 10i Commerce Services Pvt Ltd, was a Bengaluru-based e-commerce enabler founded in 2015 by Amit Sharma and Apoorva Jois. Sharma, who served as the CEO, brought his engineering background and an MBA from UCLA to the venture, having previously designed a Grid Computing Management Platform and holding two international patents. Jois, the COO, also had prior experience with online private-label brands, which provided the founding team with initial insights into the retail landscape.

The company initially positioned itself as a B2B supply chain platform with the vision to digitally empower India's vast network of small merchants and Kirana stores, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The platform provided a mobile and web application that allowed retailers to order products without needing to stock physical inventory, essentially acting as a retail operating system connecting brands, retailers, and consumers. Services extended to logistics support, procurement, and even credit lines to help small businesses manage their operations more efficiently.

ShopX garnered significant investor interest, raising over $56 million from prominent backers including Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and Fung Investment. At its peak, the company served approximately 170,000 to 200,000 retailers across hundreds of cities. However, despite its large network, the business struggled with the low-margin nature of the B2B e-commerce industry. In an attempt to find a more viable path, the company pivoted in 2021 to a consumer-centric, Shopify-style model. This new platform focused on offering cashback, discounts, and rewards to consumers shopping at their local neighborhood stores, using a gamified app to drive engagement.

This strategic shift failed to generate sufficient revenue or attract further investment. Faced with mounting financial unsustainability and an inability to meet its loan obligations, ShopX ceased operations and filed for insolvency in August 2022. The company stated that the closure was a difficult decision made after it became unviable to operate at scale within the low-margin industry.
