About Shippable

Shippable emerged on the technology scene in 2013, founded by former Microsoft colleagues Avi Cavale and Manisha Sahasrabudhe. Cavale, who served as CEO, brought over a decade of experience from Microsoft, where he worked on highly scalable internet services like Xbox 360, Office365, and Azure. The idea for Shippable was born from his experience managing large development teams and realizing that a significant portion of their time was spent on non-feature work, specifically the complexities of deploying software. Sahasrabudhe, the co-founder and CMO, complemented this with her own extensive software industry experience and an MBA from UC Berkeley.

The company established itself in the DevOps market, providing a platform to automate continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. This addressed a critical need for software development teams to streamline workflows and accelerate the process of getting code from a developer's machine into production. Shippable's platform was designed to defragment the often-complicated toolchains involved in software delivery by offering a unified, integrated solution. It catered to a wide range of clients, from individual developers to large enterprises, involved in shipping software, including Development, Test, Ops, and Security teams.

Shippable's core product was a CI/CD automation platform built to support modern, cloud-native technologies like Docker and Kubernetes. Its key features included release management, multi-cloud capabilities, and a declarative pipeline language (expressed in YAML), allowing teams to define and manage their entire software delivery process as code. The platform provided a single-pane-of-glass view, offering real-time visualization of the entire workflow, which helped in quickly identifying and resolving bottlenecks. Revenue was generated through a subscription-based model. Shippable offered flexible deployment options, including a hosted SaaS product, an on-premises server installation, and a hybrid model called Custom Nodes.

After raising a total of $10.5 million in funding from investors like Madrona Venture Group and Founders' Co-op, Shippable was acquired by JFrog in February 2019. The acquisition was a strategic move by JFrog, a major player in the DevOps space, to integrate Shippable's CI/CD capabilities into its own platform, aiming to provide a more complete, end-to-end DevOps solution for their customers. Following the acquisition, the Shippable team and its technology were incorporated into JFrog's offerings.
