About Shanghai Media Group
Shanghai Media Group (SMG) is a state-owned media and cultural conglomerate based in Shanghai, recognized as one of the largest in China. The group was formally established in 2001 through a government-led merger of several distinct media entities, including the People's Radio Station of Shanghai, East Radio Shanghai, Shanghai Television, and Oriental Television. This consolidation was part of a strategic effort to create a globally competitive media powerhouse.
The business operates under the ownership of the Shanghai municipal government and has a highly diversified portfolio. SMG's revenue model is primarily driven by advertising and other commercial sources, which account for approximately 85% of its total revenues as of early 2024. Its operations span traditional media, such as 15 TV networks and 13 radio frequencies, to new media ventures like IPTV, OTT streaming services, and online gaming. The group serves a broad audience, from local viewers in Shanghai, where its channels command high viewership, to a national and international audience through satellite TV.
A pivotal figure in SMG's growth was Li Ruigang, who became president in October 2002. With a background in journalism from Fudan University and as a visiting scholar at Columbia University, Li guided SMG through a period of significant expansion, doubling its size and diversifying into newspapers, digital cable, and IPTV services. Under his leadership, SMG forged partnerships with international companies like Viacom and Disney. Although he stepped down as president in 2011 to focus on China Media Capital (CMC), his influence shaped the company's trajectory. The current President is Fang Shizhong.
SMG's portfolio includes a vast array of services and assets. It is a major producer of content, including TV dramas, films, and documentaries. Key subsidiaries include the Oriental Pearl Media Company, which achieved a market capitalization of over 100 billion RMB in 2015, and the Yicai Media Group, a financial media arm that received a significant investment from Alibaba Group in 2015. The conglomerate also manages landmark properties like the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Mercedes Benz Arena, operates nine art troupes, and holds a 20% stake in the Shanghai Disney Resort, showcasing its deep integration into China's cultural and entertainment landscape.
