ServGate Technologies
Its users with a security platform for protection against destructive attacks
About ServGate Technologies
Founded in 1999 by Jun Li, ServGate Technologies established itself as a provider in the network security sector from its base in Milpitas, California. Li, who also served as the company's president, guided the firm through its growth phase, which included securing a significant Series A funding round of $18 million in June 2004 from investors such as Western Technology Investment, Pinnacle Ventures, and ChinaVest. The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by Amarium Technologies in April 2006.
ServGate Technologies targeted small-to-medium-sized businesses and distributed enterprises with its Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions. The core of its business was the EdgeForce platform, a hardware appliance designed to provide comprehensive protection against network security threats. This platform addressed the challenge of 'blended threats'—complex attacks that combine multiple malicious elements like viruses, worms, spam, and intrusions. The business model centered on selling these integrated security platforms and corresponding software application suites.
The EdgeForce platform offered a multi-layered security approach by integrating several functions into a single device. Its features included a firewall, Virtual Private Network (VPN) capabilities, web caching, and real-time filtering of web and email traffic. To deliver these services, ServGate collaborated with other security firms, incorporating McAfee's technology for antivirus and anti-spam protection and SurfControl for web filtering. This integrated system allowed clients to screen for spam, viruses, and malicious URLs, and block network attacks through a process described as full context inspection, simplifying security infrastructure for organizations like the construction specialist Western Summit.
