Servecast
Provider of streaming media delivery and hosting services
About Servecast
Established in 1998, Servecast was an Irish-owned internet broadcasting company headquartered in Dublin. The firm specialized in providing online broadcasting services, including live and on-demand video management and streaming for both broadband and mobile platforms. Its primary market consisted of corporate, sports, and entertainment sectors, offering solutions for online training, product demonstrations, corporate communications, and investor relations.
Servecast's business model initially focused on providing streaming media services. The company developed a pan-European network to deliver streaming media content for businesses, building a series of servers across Europe in partnership with Compaq and Cisco. This infrastructure supported its core offerings, which included commercial consultancy, streaming, digital rights management, and custom development. Later, the company shifted its business model to concentrate more on software development, creating tools that enabled client companies to produce their own training materials.
Throughout its operation, Servecast secured significant investment, raising a total of $36.1 million. Notable backers included entrepreneurs Denis O'Brien and Eddie Jordan, as well as firms like Carrier1 International, Providence Equity Partners, and Setanta Sports Holdings. In 2000, the company announced a major $40 million investment plan to expand its European network. The company was managed by CEO Kevin Quinn and later by Mark O'Meara. Following a period of rationalization and restructuring, Servecast was acquired by Level 3 Communications on July 11, 2007, for approximately $45 million in cash. At the time of the acquisition, Servecast had established a strong reputation in the European market for its content management tools and streaming media services.
