Semrock
Company that creates optical filters for the life science industry, applying patented design techniques
About Semrock
Semrock operates as a specialized manufacturer of high-performance optical filters, primarily serving the biotechnology and analytical instrumentation sectors. The company was established in September 2000 by Victor Mizrahi and Turan Erdogan, launching amidst the fervor of the telecom bubble with initial venture capital funding. The founders, Mizrahi and Erdogan, first connected in 1992 at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Mizrahi, with a Ph.D. in physics and experience at Bell Labs and Ciena, brought expertise in optical component manufacturing. Erdogan, who left a tenured professorship at the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics to co-found the company, contributed deep knowledge in fiber and waveguide devices. Their combined experience at the forefront of optical technology shaped Semrock's trajectory.
Initially focused on the telecommunications market, the company pivoted following the sector's collapse. Leveraging their expertise in thin-film filters, they redirected their efforts toward the life sciences market, a move that proved successful. A key technological pillar for the company is its advanced ion-beam sputtering (IBS) process, which was originally developed for other industries but was adapted by Semrock for high-volume production of optical filters. This method produces dense, durable, and precise multi-layer coatings, enabling the creation of spectrally complex filters. Semrock's products include bandpass, edge, dichroic, and notch filters, which are critical components in applications like fluorescence microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, DNA sequencing, and PCR-based diagnostics. The business model serves both high-volume OEM manufacturers, which account for a significant portion of its business, and end-users who can purchase from an extensive catalog of standard products.
In October 2008, Semrock was acquired by IDEX Corporation for approximately $60 million and integrated into IDEX's Health and Science Technologies segment, operating as a stand-alone business unit. At the time of the acquisition, Semrock reported annual revenues of around $21 million. The acquisition was part of IDEX's strategy to expand its offerings in the life sciences market. Since the acquisition, Semrock has continued to operate under the IDEX Health & Science umbrella, achieving milestones such as shipping its five millionth filter by April 2020. The company's filters have been instrumental in technologies used for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
