SelfCare.com
SelfCarecom, a health and wellness e-commerce site for women and their families
About SelfCare.com
In the late 1990s, the concept of wellness was moving from the fringe to the mainstream. A company, led by Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Rose, was already there. It began as a print magazine in 1976 and evolved into a mail-order catalog in 1983, selling hard-to-find health products like allergy-free bedding and heart monitors. In July 1999, with the internet boom in full swing, it pivoted online, acquiring the perfect domain: SelfCare.com. With Larry Bodner as President and COO, SelfCare.com was positioned as a trusted e-commerce destination for health-conscious shoppers, a niche many believed was the 'sweet spot' of online retail. The market agreed. In March 2000, the company announced a massive $80 million investment from a consortium including major players like NBC, Women.com, and Intel. This brought its total funding to $120 million and put the company on a clear path toward an IPO. The investment, however, came at the absolute peak of the market. That very same month, the dot-com bubble began to burst. Technology stocks, which had soared to unprecedented heights, began a rapid and devastating collapse. Like many e-commerce companies of the era, such as Pets.com and Webvan, the business model depended on massive marketing spend to acquire customers, fueled by venture capital. When the market turned and capital dried up, the path to profitability vanished almost overnight. While specific details of its final days are scarce, the company disappeared from the landscape along with countless other dot-com flameouts. The once-promising brand, backed by major industry names and significant capital, ultimately could not survive the crash. Today, the domain SelfCare.com is up for sale, a digital tombstone for a company that was a textbook example of the dot-com era's spectacular rise and fall.
