Building a new generation of financial products for the 100MM Americans living paycheck to paycheck MoreLess

SeedFi operated as a financial technology company with a mission to improve the financial health of underserved Americans. Founded in 2019 by Jim McGinley, Eric Burton, Rodrigo Menezes, Bernardo Menezes, and Greg Berman, the San Francisco-based firm aimed to address the cycle of debt affecting millions living paycheck to paycheck. The founding team, including CEO Jim McGinley and COO Eric Burton, brought experience from the credit industry and mission-driven startups like Capital One and Oportun, fueling their goal to create accessible financial products. Burton's personal experiences with debt and credit challenges were a significant influence on the company's mission.

The company's business model centered on providing alternatives to high-interest payday and installment loans by integrating savings with credit-building mechanisms. SeedFi's revenue was generated through interest on its loan products and potentially through partnerships. The firm provided personal loan services specifically designed for lower-income consumers, enabling them to build savings, improve their credit scores, and access funds when needed. Payments were reported to the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—to help users establish a positive payment history.

SeedFi offered two primary products. The 'Credit Builder Plan' was a savings-focused tool where users made small, regular payments (as low as $10 per paycheck) into a locked savings account. These payments were reported to credit bureaus, and upon reaching a $500 savings threshold, the funds became accessible to the user. The 'Borrow & Grow Plan' combined an immediate-access personal loan with a credit-builder. A portion of the approved loan was available to the borrower upfront, while the remainder was placed in a locked savings account, which was released once the loan was fully repaid. This structure provided emergency funds while encouraging savings and positive credit behavior.

In a significant milestone, SeedFi partnered with Credit Karma to offer its Credit Builder product to Credit Karma's members. This collaboration reportedly helped members increase their credit scores by an average of 21 points within 30 to 45 days and collectively save over $10 million. Following this successful partnership, Intuit, the parent company of Credit Karma, announced its acquisition of SeedFi on December 1, 2022. The acquisition was intended to integrate SeedFi's technology more deeply into the Credit Karma platform, aiming to accelerate financial progress for more consumers. After the acquisition, SeedFi ceased offering new personal loans, and existing 'Borrow & Grow' plans were transferred to a third-party servicer, Systems and Services Technologies (SST).
