SeaMobile
MTN, the premier global provider of communications, connectivity and content services to cruises, superyachts, ferries & remote locations around the world.
About SeaMobile
SeaMobile, Inc. was established in March 2005 as a provider of at-sea communication services. The founding team consisted of William D. Marks, who had previously founded DSS Direct/DirectTV®, his father and cable television entrepreneur William Marks, Sr., and Jack Donohue, an executive from McCaw Cellular Communications. Many on the executive team were veterans of McCaw Cellular, bringing extensive experience from the early days of the wireless industry.
The company focused on delivering wireless voice, data, and internet services to the maritime market, a segment considered underserved at the time. Its target clients included cruise lines, ferries, yachts, container ships, and offshore oil and gas platforms. SeaMobile's business model revolved around providing seamless connectivity for travelers and workers at sea, allowing them to use their personal mobile devices just as they would on land. Revenue was generated through worldwide roaming agreements with home carriers, which handled billing for the end-users.
SeaMobile's core product was a proprietary IP and software-based technology platform. This system was designed to be compatible with major wireless standards, including GSM, GPRS, and CDMA, ensuring broad accessibility for users. The service portfolio encompassed mobile phone voice and data, wireless access for laptops and PDAs, and other content services. A significant milestone occurred in May 2006 when SeaMobile acquired Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), a provider of satellite-based broadband communications. This acquisition was a strategic move to combine wireless and satellite expertise. Shortly after, in December 2006, the company announced its definitive agreement to acquire Geolink, a provider of satellite communications with a strong presence in the European market.
