About Scout Electromedia

Scout Electromedia, originally founded as Scout Electronics in 1999, was a San Francisco-based consumer product company that emerged during the dot-com era. The company was established by the trio of Dan Bomze, William Cockayne, and Geoff Pitfield. It secured over $20 million in venture capital from prominent investors including Flatiron Partners, TechFund, idealab!, and Chase Capital Partners, with an estimated total funding of $40 million to develop and market its flagship product.

The firm's core offering was the "modo," a handheld wireless device designed to deliver curated, up-to-the-minute entertainment and lifestyle information to a young, urban demographic in cities like New York and San Francisco. Launched in September 2000, the modo was a physical device priced at approximately $100, which provided content such as restaurant reviews, movie listings, and original editorial content without a monthly subscription fee. The business model was predicated on a one-time hardware sale and anticipated revenue from banner advertisements displayed on the device's screen. The modo utilized pager networks for its data delivery and featured a monochrome display, operating on a proprietary OS based on Pixo.

Despite generating considerable media attention and being lauded for its design, the company's trajectory was short-lived. Scout Electromedia ceased operations abruptly in October 2000, just two months after the modo's launch and a day before its planned expansion to Los Angeles. The company's demise is attributed to the financial turmoil of the dot-com crash, which led to a sudden halt in funding from its venture backers who were facing their own financial difficulties. At the time of its closure, the company employed around 84 people. The failure to secure a third round of financing proved to be the final blow, making Scout Electromedia a notable case study of the dot-com bubble's collapse.
