By the mid-2010s, a new wave of fintech startups like Betterment and Wealthfront were popularizing the concept of "robo-advisors," using technology to automate investment management. For an established giant like Charles Schwab, a company that pioneered the discount brokerage model in the 1970s, this was a familiar disruption. Rather than wait, the firm decided to enter the arena directly. In March 2015, Charles Schwab launched Schwab Intelligent Portfolios. Led by executives like Tobin McDaniel, the project was developed by an internal team that grew from just three people to over 300, tasked with creating a competitive offering. The service was designed to build, monitor, and rebalance diversified portfolios using algorithms, with no advisory fees charged to the client. This move leveraged Schwab's scale to challenge the newcomers on price and accessibility. Just a few months after its retail debut, Schwab expanded the service with Institutional Intelligent Portfolios, a version for independent financial advisors. The company continued to build on the platform, launching Schwab Intelligent Advisory in 2017, a hybrid model that combined the automated portfolios with access to human CFP professionals for a fee. This series of launches demonstrated Schwab's strategy: using its established brand and resources to quickly build and scale a technology-driven solution to meet a new market demand.
