ScaleXtreme Server Monitoring and Automation from the Cloud
About ScaleXtreme
ScaleXtreme, established in 2010, operated as a provider of enterprise-class, cloud-based management solutions before its acquisition by Citrix in May 2014. The company was co-founded by CEO Nand Mulchandani and CTO Balaji Srinivasa, both of whom brought extensive experience in systems management, virtualization, and security. Mulchandani was a serial entrepreneur, having previously co-founded two other tech firms, Oblix and Determina, which were acquired by Oracle and VMware respectively. His background includes roles at Accel Partners, VMware, and an early career at Sun Microsystems. Srinivasa was formerly the Principal Architect at BladeLogic, an enterprise systems management vendor acquired by BMC.
The firm secured a $2.5 million investment from Accel Partners in August 2010 and later raised an $11 million Series B round led by Ignition Partners, with Accel also participating. ScaleXtreme's business model centered on providing a SaaS platform for automating the delivery and management of IT services, applications, and server infrastructure. The platform was designed for enterprise clients, including Global 500 companies, to manage mission-critical applications across private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. It allowed IT administrators to manage servers and virtual machines, regardless of their location or platform, from a single web-based console accessible from any device.
The ScaleXtreme platform's key capabilities included the creation, deployment, and management of cloud applications, auto-scaling across different clouds, and enforcing access control and governance. It also offered server management features such as monitoring, automated patch management, provisioning, and automation. Following the acquisition, Citrix integrated ScaleXtreme's technology to enhance its own cloud management offerings, specifically to accelerate the service automation capabilities within Citrix Workspace Services. The technology became a core component of the Lifecycle Management module in the Citrix Workspace Cloud, which aimed to automate the deployment and management of applications and infrastructure across various clouds like AWS and Azure, as well as on-premise environments.
