Scale Energy is a German developer of industrial battery storage systems aiming to build Europe's largest decentralized energy storage network. Founded in January 2024 by Elias Aruna (CEO), Christoph Koessler, and Nikolas Fendel, the Berlin-based company leverages the founders' combined expertise in energy operations, infrastructure financing, and engineering. Two of the co-founders, Aruna and Koessler, are from Vienna.

The company's business model centers on installing and operating battery energy storage systems (BESS) at industrial sites with existing, often underutilized, grid connections of more than 1,000 kW. This strategy avoids the high capital expenditure and lengthy delays associated with building new greenfield storage infrastructure. Scale Energy offers its solutions at no upfront investment for the client. Instead, it operates on a profit-sharing or leasing model, where it monetizes the battery's flexibility on the energy markets and shares the revenue with the industrial partner. This allows clients to reduce energy costs, enhance energy security against price volatility and grid disruptions, and participate in the energy transition without capital outlay.

Scale Energy serves industrial clients such as paper producers, automotive suppliers, and aluminum manufacturers, primarily in Germany and Austria. The company's services include peak shaving to reduce grid fees and shifting electricity consumption to lower-price periods. Their proprietary industrial data engine optimizes battery dispatch by analyzing thousands of industrial electrical load profiles in real-time. The company manages the entire process for its clients, from planning and regulatory permits to installation, operation, and maintenance.

Just over a year after its founding, in February 2025, Scale Energy announced it had secured €2 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round led by climate-tech investor Climentum Capital. The round also saw participation from Vireo Ventures, existing shareholders Antler and P3A, and several angel investors. Concurrently, the company secured a CapEx facility commitment from a DACH-based infrastructure investor for 100 MW of battery projects, enabling the rapid rollout of its strategy. By July 2025, the company reported having over 1 GW of decentralized battery storage projects in development across more than 100 industrial sites.
