About SavingStar
SavingStar, Inc. operated as a fully digital, national grocery e-coupon service founded in 2010 by David Rochon, who also served as the company's CEO. The company was established to disrupt the paper-based grocery promotion industry by providing a more convenient and environmentally friendly way for consumers to save money. The service launched in April 2011, and by March 2012, it had attracted 1.5 million members. The platform's core offering was a paperless coupon system accessible via its website and mobile apps for both iPhone and Android devices. Consumers could link digital offers, or eCoupons, to their grocery and drugstore loyalty cards across a vast network of participating retailers. When a shopper used their loyalty card at checkout, the value of the redeemed eCoupon was not deducted from the bill but was instead deposited into the user's SavingStar account. Once an account balance reached a specified threshold, users could cash out their savings via a bank or PayPal transfer, an Amazon gift card, or a donation to charity.

The business model centered on providing consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands a digital platform to offer targeted promotions and reward consumer loyalty. SavingStar's technology could track purchases at the UPC level, enabling unique offer types like the "One or Many" promotion, which rewarded shoppers for multiple purchases of a brand's products over time and across different stores. This created an efficient way for brands to manage loyalty programs without the traditional friction of manual code entry. The company generated revenue by partnering with these CPG brands to feature their offers on the platform. The service was free for consumers and served a broad market of grocery shoppers across the United States, at its peak partnering with over 100 retail chains representing more than 70,000 stores. The company raised a total of $36 million in funding over 7 rounds from investors including First Round Capital, Flybridge Capital Partners, and DCM Ventures.
In August 2018, Quotient Technology, the owner of Coupons.com, acquired SavingStar. Initially, SavingStar continued to operate as an independent service. However, its features were gradually integrated into the Coupons.com platform. On November 30, 2020, the SavingStar program was officially shut down, with its services fully transitioning to a new cash-back program offered by Coupons.com.
