About SardexPay

SardexPay operates a B2B multilateral barter system, creating a complementary currency circuit for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Sardinia, Italy. Founded in 2010 by Gabriele Littera, Giuseppe Littera, Carlo Mancosu, and Piero Sanna, the company emerged from their university theses and a shared ambition to address the local economic impacts of the 2008 financial crisis. The founders, all hailing from Sardinia, combined their diverse backgrounds in economics, law, and communication to develop a solution aimed at mitigating credit crunches and fostering local commerce.

The core of SardexPay's business is a digital platform where member companies can buy and sell goods and services from one another without using traditional currency. Instead, transactions are recorded in Sardex credits, a digital currency pegged 1:1 with the Euro. This system allows businesses, which primarily include a diverse range of local SMEs from sectors like hospitality, construction, and professional services, to acquire necessary resources even when cash flow is tight. SardexPay generates revenue by charging its members an annual subscription fee to participate in the network, rather than taking a percentage of each transaction.

The platform functions as a closed-loop economy, helping to insulate local businesses from broader financial market volatility and stimulating regional economic activity. When a company sells a product or service, its account is credited with Sardex; when it makes a purchase within the network, its account is debited. This process effectively provides member businesses with an interest-free line of credit, enabling them to conserve cash for expenses that cannot be paid within the network, such as taxes and salaries. The model has demonstrated significant resilience and has since expanded beyond Sardinia, with similar circuits being established in other Italian regions under the SardexPay umbrella.
