In 1980, amidst the birth of Silicon Valley, Jure Sola and Milan Mandarić founded Sanmina as a manufacturer of printed circuit boards. Their business was straightforward: build the complex electronic foundations that other technology companies needed to create their own innovative products. This focus on being a critical, behind-the-scenes partner allowed them to grow alongside the booming tech industry, supplying essential components for an expanding list of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). A pivotal moment arrived in 2001 when Sanmina, a significant player in telecommunications hardware, merged with SCI Systems in a deal valued at approximately $6 billion. At the time, SCI was larger but focused on lower-margin products like PC manufacturing. This strategic acquisition created a new entity, Sanmina-SCI, transforming it into one of the world's largest and most diversified electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers. The merger broadened their customer base beyond communications into computing, medical, and industrial sectors. Today, Sanmina operates as a global, end-to-end manufacturing solutions provider. While the name might not be on the products you use every day, the company's work is integral to the technology that powers communications, cloud computing, medical devices, and more.
