About Sales.com
In March 1999, former Oracle executive Marc Benioff, alongside Parker Harris, Dave Moellenhoff, and Frank Dominguez, founded a company with a revolutionary idea: to deliver enterprise software through a simple website. Operating out of a San Francisco apartment, they launched Salesforce.com, pioneering the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. Their provocative marketing slogan, "The End of Software," directly challenged the dominant model of selling software on CD-ROMs. The company's vision was to make customer relationship management (CRM) software accessible and affordable. Instead of large upfront investments in software and hardware, customers could pay a monthly subscription fee. This model was initially met with skepticism, but it quickly gained traction. Salesforce hit its first profitable quarter in 2003 and went public in June 2004, raising $110 million in its IPO. A key part of Salesforce's journey has been its strategic acquisitions. Over the years, it has acquired dozens of companies, including major players like the analytics platform Tableau for $15.7 billion in 2019 and the collaboration hub Slack for $27.7 billion in 2020. These acquisitions have continuously expanded Salesforce's platform, moving it far beyond its original CRM focus into marketing, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence.
