RuleSpace
Instant web content recognition enabling internet applications
About RuleSpace
RuleSpace, founded in 1996 by Adrian Russell Falla, established itself as a provider of web content categorization technology. The firm's core business centered on its automated web content recognition and URL filtering technology, which was utilized in both enterprise and consumer security solutions. The company operated on an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) model, providing its technology to third-party web filtering solutions that served a global user base of over 350 million, spanning internet service providers, mobile operators, businesses, and individual consumers.
The technology developed by RuleSpace combined database lookups with real-time analysis to accurately categorize websites, proving particularly effective for dynamic sites with user-generated content. Its system, referred to as the Automated Categorization System (ACS), used machine-learning algorithms and contextual pattern recognition to assign categories. This was supplemented by human analysts for complex cases. The databases were constantly updated to provide protection against malware and phishing threats. The company's primary product was a Software Development Kit (SDK) that provided a lightweight programming interface for clients to query the URL category databases and real-time categorization engines.
In a strategic move to bolster its security offerings, Symantec Corporation acquired RuleSpace on October 10, 2010, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition was a natural progression of a close partnership the two companies already had. Following the acquisition, RuleSpace's technology was integrated into Symantec's broader product portfolio, including the Symantec Web Gateway and Norton Web Filtering products, rather than continuing as a standalone product. Symantec itself later underwent corporate changes, becoming NortonLifeLock and subsequently Gen Digital.
