About RudaCure
RudaCure Co., Ltd. is a South Korean clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company established in 2018, specializing in the development of treatments for sensory diseases with significant unmet medical needs. The company was founded by CEO Yong Ho Kim, who identified a gap in the Korean biopharmaceutical market, which has traditionally focused on cancer and metabolic diseases. Kim, an Assistant Professor at Gachon University's Department of Physiology with over two decades of experience in physiology and pain research, leveraged his extensive academic background, including a Ph.D. from Seoul National University and postdoctoral work at Duke University Medical Center, to steer the company's research direction. RudaCure operates on a business model centered on the research, development, and subsequent out-licensing of its therapeutic candidates to global pharmaceutical partners for commercialization.
The company's pipeline is spearheaded by two primary assets. The leading candidate, RCI001, is a first-in-class topical ophthalmic solution for Dry Eye Disease (DED) and other ocular surface diseases (OSDs). This treatment works by inhibiting Rac1, a protein involved in inflammatory pathways, thereby reducing inflammation, promoting corneal recovery, and increasing tear production. Pre-clinical data has shown that RCI001 can restore corneal epithelial integrity more rapidly than conventional corticosteroid treatments. The main component of RCI001, 8-oxo-dG, has been shown to inhibit the activation of neutrophils and macrophages. RudaCure has partnered with Hanlim Pharmaceuticals for the development and distribution of RCI001 in South Korea and has expanded its indications to include corneal ulcers. The second key asset, RCI002, is a non-opioid treatment being developed for chronic and neuropathic pain. This therapeutic aims to provide a safer alternative to existing pain management drugs by inhibiting TRPV1, a key receptor in pain signaling pathways.
Since its founding, RudaCure has actively pursued a global expansion strategy. A significant milestone was achieved in April 2022 when the company secured $16.5 million in a Series A funding round. To facilitate its entry into the U.S. market, the company has established an office in New York and participated in accelerator programs like MassChallenge and the KIC DC Bio Accelerator. The company engages in contract research services and has established a network of collaborations with institutions like Gil Hospital and Cha Hospital to advance its clinical trials. RudaCure has received approval from the FDA for a Phase 2 clinical trial for RCI001 and continues to seek global licensing and gene therapy collaborations.
