Rubicon Labs, founded in 2011, operated as a cybersecurity company specializing in secure identity and control solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT) market. The firm was established by individuals with prior experience at major technology companies including Apple and Broadcom. Although now reported as deadpooled, the company had secured a total of $20.5 million in funding across five rounds from investors such as Akamai, Pelion Venture Partners, and Third Point.

The company's business was centered on providing a platform that secured device-to-cloud communications. It catered to a diverse range of markets, including industrial, automotive, smart buildings, medical, and payments sectors. Rubicon Labs offered its Identity Platform as a Software as a Service (SaaS), generating revenue by enabling developers to authenticate, secure, and manage their connected devices. This model allowed clients to provision device identity, encrypt and sign data, and control devices through policies and over-the-air updates.

The core of Rubicon Labs' offering was a two-part system: an Identity Agent and an Identity Service. The Identity Agent was a software solution designed to be CPU/RTOS agnostic, ensuring seamless integration and high performance for even low-resource IoT devices. Complementing this was the Identity Service, a cloud-based architecture built for reliability and scalability, capable of managing millions of devices per network while protecting security keys from end-to-end.
