Rubi Laboratories has developed a patent-pending, cell-free biocatalytic process that converts carbon emissions into carbon-negative cellulosic textiles, starting with viscose. The technology uses enzymes to capture CO2 from manufacturing waste streams and converts it into cellulose pulp, which is then spun into yarn. This process is designed to be water-neutral, land-neutral, and produces a naturally biodegradable product. The company's technology is flexible and can capture CO2 from various concentrations, including directly from the air.

The company's business model centers on selling its sustainable materials to the fashion industry, targeting brands aiming to reduce their environmental impact. Revenue is generated through the sale of these carbon-negative textiles. Rubi has established partnerships and pilot programs with major brands such as Walmart, H&M, Patagonia, Ganni, and Urban Outfitters. The company's long-term vision extends beyond textiles to apply its core technology to other sectors, including food, packaging, and building materials.

Rubi Laboratories has secured significant funding to scale its operations. After an initial seed round of $4.5 million in February 2022, they raised an additional $8.7 million, bringing their total seed funding to over $13 million. In May 2024, the company closed a $30 million Series A funding round, reaching a valuation of $100 million.
