rPath
Automation platform for multi-environment application deployment and maintenance.
About rPath
rPath, Inc. was a technology company that developed solutions to automate the construction, deployment, and management of software across physical, virtual, and cloud environments. Founded in April 2005 by Erik Troan and Billy Marshall, the company was headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. Troan, a co-author of the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM), brought deep expertise in Linux package management to the venture. Marshall, the first CEO, previously served as VP of North America Sales at Red Hat.
The company's core technology revolved around a model-driven, version-controlled repository for managing software systems. This platform, rBuilder, allowed developers and IT organizations to package applications as self-contained virtual appliances. A key feature was its ability to automatically analyze and discover an application's entire dependency chain, including operating system components and libraries, which reduced maintenance failures and outages. rPath's system applied the principles of source code control to deployable software systems, managing manifests, packages, binaries, and configurations, which enabled quick reproduction, patching, and updates. The technology supported various operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and was also offered as a software as a service (SaaS) solution. Its open-source package manager, Conary, formed the core of the rBuilder platform.
Initially focused on independent software vendors (ISVs), rPath transitioned in 2009 to serve enterprise IT organizations seeking to industrialize data center operations through automation. The company was an early proponent of software appliances and cloud computing, forming the NRE Alliance with newScale and Eucalyptus Systems in 2010 to promote private and hybrid cloud adoption. Over its lifetime, rPath raised approximately $32.5 million in venture capital from investors including North Bridge Venture Partners, General Catalyst Partners, and Wakefield Group.
In November 2012, business analytics firm SAS Institute acquired rPath's key assets, including its technology and staff, for a reported $100 million. Following the acquisition, rPath's employees formed a new Platform Deployment Technologies group within SAS's research and development division, and the rPath Linux distribution was discontinued.
