Row44
Provides satellite-based inflight Wi-Fi and device-based entertainment for airlines worldwide
About Row44
Row44, established in 2004 by co-founders John Guidon and Gregg Fialcowitz, specialized in providing satellite-based in-flight broadband connectivity and entertainment for the commercial airline industry. The company's name was conceived by Guidon, reflecting on a poor travel experience in the last row of a long flight. The firm's core offering was a platform that delivered high-speed internet to passengers' personal WiFi-enabled devices.
A key technical distinction for Row44 was its use of Ku-band satellite technology. This approach enabled consistent broadband service on flights over both land and sea, offering a global reach that was a significant advantage over competitors reliant on air-to-ground networks. Beyond simple web access, the service portfolio expanded to include a rich entertainment package, featuring live television, streaming video-on-demand, and a portal for shopping and booking destination-based activities. This platform was designed to create ancillary revenue opportunities for airlines beyond the direct sale of internet access.
Major clients included Southwest Airlines and Icelandair, and by early 2013, the company had equipped over 500 aircraft across four continents. In November 2012, Row44 was acquired by Global Eagle Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), in a deal valued at approximately $430 million. The transaction merged Row44 with content provider Advanced Inflight Alliance AG (AIA), creating a new, integrated entity named Global Eagle Entertainment, which subsequently traded on the Nasdaq. At the time of the acquisition, John Guidon had transitioned to the Chief Technology Officer role, with John LaValle serving as CEO.
