Rockmelt
RockMelt is re-imagining the browser for how people use the web today by making it easy to stay in touch with friends, search online, and get updates from your favorite sites
About Rockmelt
Rockmelt, Inc. was a software company founded in November 2008 by Tim Howes and Eric Vishria, operating from Mountain View, California. The founders brought significant industry experience; both were former executives at Opsware, a company acquired by HP, and Vishria had also been an early employee at Loudcloud. Their venture gained substantial attention partly due to backing from prominent venture capitalist and Netscape co-founder, Marc Andreessen.

The company's primary offering was a social web browser designed to integrate social media directly into the core browsing experience. Built on Google's open-source Chromium project, the Rockmelt browser aimed to serve individuals who heavily used social platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Its interface featured two sidebars, or "Edges," which flanked the main content window. The left edge displayed a list of Facebook friends for quick chatting, while the right edge provided a stream of notifications and updates from Facebook, Twitter, and RSS feeds from other websites like YouTube. This design allowed users to chat, share content, and monitor social feeds without navigating away from their current page. A key feature was a dedicated "Share" button that simplified posting links and updates to social networks.
Rockmelt launched its desktop browser in a private beta in November 2010, followed by an open beta in March 2011. The company expanded its ecosystem with applications for iPhone, iPad, and Android between 2011 and 2013. Despite its novel approach to integrating social activity with web browsing, the desktop product struggled to gain significant market traction. In April 2013, citing the high cost of keeping pace with Chromium's updates, Rockmelt discontinued its desktop browser and pivoted. The new focus became a web-based content discovery portal and mobile apps that aggregated content from various sources, in a style similar to Flipboard.
On August 2, 2013, Yahoo acquired Rockmelt for a reported sum of $60 to $70 million. The acquisition was largely viewed as a talent acquisition, with Yahoo aiming to integrate Rockmelt's technology and team into its mobile and media platforms to enhance content personalization and discovery. Following the acquisition, all Rockmelt applications and its website were shut down on August 31, 2013, marking the end of the company's operations.
