Roadstar.ai emerged in May 2017 as a developer of Level 4 autonomous driving solutions, founded by former colleagues from Baidu's US research institute: Tong Xianqiao (CEO), Heng Liang (CTO), and Zhou Guang (Chief Scientist). The founders leveraged their extensive experience from prominent tech firms like Google, Tesla, NVIDIA, and Apple to build the company. Roadstar.ai operated in the competitive autonomous vehicle software market, with R&D centers in Silicon Valley, Shenzhen, and Beijing, aiming to provide self-driving systems to automotive manufacturers and eventually operate its own fleet of robo-taxis.

The company's business model focused on developing and commercializing full-stack autonomous driving hardware and software solutions. A significant milestone was achieved in May 2018 when Roadstar.ai secured a record-breaking $128 million in a Series A funding round led by Wu Capital and Shenzhen Capital Group. This capital was intended to expand its test fleet and advance its technology. The firm planned to collaborate with automakers to integrate its systems into passenger and commercial vehicles, with ambitions to deploy hundreds of self-driving cars by 2019 and over a thousand by 2020.

Roadstar.ai's core technology centered on two proprietary systems: HeteroSync and DeepFusion. HeteroSync was a multi-sensor fusion framework designed to integrate data from LiDAR, cameras, radar, GPS, and IMUs to achieve precise time and spatial synchronization for safe navigation. DeepFusion utilized this fused data to enable robust and efficient decision-making for the vehicle. The company showcased its technology, including a prototype at CES 2019 and an autonomous shuttle service at the 2018 World Internet Conference, demonstrating its system's ability to handle complex urban traffic. Despite its promising start and technological achievements, severe internal conflicts and allegations of misconduct, including the firing of co-founder Zhou Gang in January 2019, led to a loss of investor confidence. These disputes ultimately resulted in the company's liquidation and bankruptcy by March 2019, less than two years after its inception.
