Robert J. Moore, who served as CEO, had previously worked as an analyst at a venture capital firm, where he witnessed firsthand the challenges companies faced in consolidating and analyzing data from disparate sources. Co-founder Jake Stein brought his technical expertise to the table as the company's COO. Their combined experience created a foundation for a platform designed to simplify complex data analysis for non-technical users in the rapidly growing e-commerce sector.

The company's core business was providing a hosted software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that integrated with various data sources, including databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL, and third-party services such as Salesforce, Google Analytics, and Facebook Ads. This allowed clients to consolidate their data into a central data warehouse. From there, RJMetrics offered a suite of tools for data exploration and visualization, enabling businesses to create dashboards and reports to track key performance indicators (KPIs), understand customer lifetime value, and analyze marketing campaign effectiveness.

RJMetrics primarily targeted small and medium-sized online businesses, particularly in the e-commerce space, that needed sophisticated analytics but lacked the resources to build an in-house data science team. Its business model was based on tiered subscription fees, determined by factors like the volume of data being processed and the number of data sources connected. A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Magento Commerce in 2016 for an undisclosed amount. Following the acquisition, the company was split into two distinct entities. The original business intelligence tool was rebranded as Magento Analytics, integrating its capabilities into the Magento e-commerce platform. Simultaneously, the data infrastructure and pipeline technology that powered the platform was spun out into a new, independent company called Stitch Data, with Jake Stein leading as its CEO.
