Richemont
Luxury goods holding company that produces and sells high-end products such as jewelry, watches, leather goods, and accessories through its diverse portfolio of prestigious brands
About Richemont
The story of Richemont begins not with glittering jewels, but with tobacco and alcohol in 1940s South Africa. Dr. Anton Rupert founded the Rembrandt Group, which grew into a diversified conglomerate with interests ranging from mining to finance. A key piece of the portfolio was an investment in Rothmans International, which in turn held stakes in luxury brands like Cartier and Dunhill. Enter the founder's son, Johann Rupert. With a background in investment banking in New York, he saw the immense potential locked within Rembrandt's international luxury assets. In a pivotal move, he orchestrated the spin-off of these assets from the South African parent company. This strategic decision in 1988 gave birth to Compagnie Financière Richemont SA, a new, Swiss-based holding company purely focused on luxury goods. Richemont was publicly listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. This wasn't a typical startup IPO, but the creation of a new public entity from the assets of an old one. The playbook was clear: acquire and nurture iconic Maisons with rich heritages. The company solidified its control over Cartier and began a series of strategic acquisitions, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and IWC Schaffhausen. Over the years, Richemont deliberately divested its remaining tobacco interests to sharpen its focus on the high-end market, cementing its status as a global luxury powerhouse.
